The Functions of a Film Opening

There are many different functions to a film opening and there are many different reasons as to why certain conventions are used. The main purpose of a film opening is to draw the viewers attention and allow them to grasp some interest in the film.

The Enigma is a key aspect to consider. Its when the viewers start to question what's happening in the film and want to know more so they can understand the answers to these questions. Films usually set up these enigma's through by creating a sense of uncertainty. The enigma's could be something as simple as 'how are these characters linked?' or 'why did the man get killed?' which want us as viewers to want to progress more in to the film so we can discover the answer this creates intrigue and intensity.
Another key function is to introduce characters and show their role in the film, but also how they are as a character for example a good guy or a villain? From the beginning we decide whether we like the character and if we are able to relate to the character. A film that show the contrast between roles and gets them across successfully is the film 'Se7en'. 'Se7en' shows the difference between its main characters Morgan Freeman, an assertive old, black man who is an experienced detective and is also heavily organised. Then on the other hand there is Brad Pitt, a cocky ladies man who is a young white man and is of lesser experience. Furthermore he thinks that he is much better then he really is which shows much naivety. All of this is shown in the opening of 'Se7en' which is a perfect example of the impact a film opening can make.
In addition the film opening must set the scene and get across the locations, themes and time. This must be made very clear to the audience otherwise they get confused. Another thing that must be tackled is the atmosphere and genre which also must be made clear to the audience. The audience must be able to grasp the genre in the film opening so they can decide whether they like it or not.
Other key things to consider about a film opening is the style which can be seen though music and costumes. For example if a man is smartly dressed then he more likely to have a high status in the film and this also creates a sophisticated feel.
There usually is some big event that takes place which creates much curiosity such as a death, or a robbery etc. These events also introduce more enigma's towards the audience. Finally the narrative is a key aspect and has just as much of an impact as the other functions. The narrative can build suspense or explain the story and allow the viewer to not get confused, but also gives the story line and sometimes with voice-overs gives the viewer a direct point of view.
