In 'The Neurotic' the representation of men is seen as negative. The stalker is played by a male character and displays the stalker as being vicious and slightly disturbed. Harley's character is the basis of the title which is 'The Neurotic'. In the thriller it demonstrates the conventional themes and story lines that are usually used because again the men are in dominance and the female character is presented as weak and a victim. Usually women are explored as being less in control which is the case in our thriller where Eve's character is running away and is uncertain of her life seeing as she is not in power.

In this shot you can see that Sarah's character is trying to find a means of escape and trying to get a hold of her life. This shows that the female representation is being displayed as women being inferior to men, they have less control, however are not vicious and may possibly be more emotional. On the other hand in this shot of Harley's shadow you can extract from it that may be he has a dark past and ulterior motives. This is a representation of men being harmful and secretive.

We tried to use a contrast shadows and chiaroscuro to make the stalker seem almost possessive and mysterious. There is no hero present in this thriller to allow any comparison between hero and villain, however there is a contrast between villain and victim which is ultimately a contrast between genders. This as the audience makes us see that males are being shown as in dominance but also negative and controlling where as the woman is percieved as being defenseless. The stalkers costume of dark clothing signifies that he is frightening. The use of the collar and hidden face suggests that men are secretive and hide away. We used a black coat to tie in with the mise-en-scene and the ambient lighting of the scenes. They were later edited with high contrast which was easier to do because of the black coat. Where as Sarah's character 'Eve' is seen in more casual clothes. Eve is wearing a partly pink costume which may very well display and typical colour link made between women and pink. This may be seen as a generalisation but also that women are more feminine. Pink may be considered a 'girly' colour which demonstrates the stereotypical view that women and men are not equal and only women should do what women 'are suppose to do'.
