I am going to research into film audiences by carrying out quantitative data which is going to be a questionnaire. The questionnaire will be asking what audiences look for in a film, what are their expectations of a film? Where they hear about films? How films are marketed to them? And also if they prefer mainstream or independent films. The questionnaire will allow me to see what audiences expect from a film and enable me to understand the audience better. I want simply get a greater understanding of the audience so his can help me in my film opening.

Furthermore I want to find out what audience’s expect from a mainstream film and how this differs from their expectations to an independent film. If the lighting, soundtrack, voiceover or the conventions of either have any par to play in the film they want to watch (mainstream or independent). Another thing I want to find out is what brings the audience’s attention to a film, whether it is the actors in the movie or if it’s the director who directed the film. Sometimes it may be solely the storyline that draws them in or just based on reviews they’ve read. Also one of the main things that I want to research is where they usually watch their films if it’s in the cinema or on their mobile phones, or if they prefer to just hire/buy DVDS.

I expect to draw a conclusion showing me clearly what the audience expect from any film whether it’s mainstream or independent. I want to be able to generalise and see which of these best apply to the target audience. I predict that most people prefer to watch mainstream films to independent films because they are less controversial and less challenging therefore targets a wider audience without causing too much controversy. Mainstream tackles most if not all of the conventions needed however with independent it challenges the viewer and so people are less likely to watch something where they don’t expect what’s about to happen.
